Catalyst Update Meeting with Syneos Health: A Collaborative Step Forward

On 8 November 2024, the Clinical Investigation Centre (CIC) at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) welcomed the Syneos Health team for a catalyst update meeting. This important session brought together key stakeholders to discuss clinical trial progress, operational improvements, and strategic plans for future collaborations.

Representing Syneos Health were Mimi Ismail and Kiat-Ee Yong, both Clinical Trial Managers, along with Mabel Tan, Country Head for Southeast Asia. CIC was represented by its new Head, Dr. Yeoh Wei Sien, alongside the CIC Clinical Operation team.

Discussion Highlights:

The meeting celebrated a significant milestone for CIC as it was acknowledged as the first site in Malaysia to recruit a subject for the INTERCEPT 747-308 study. This phase 2/3 clinical trial focuses on evaluating obeticholic acid in pediatric subjects with biliary atresia. The study, led by Dr. Chew Kee Seang and supported by Study Coordinators Ms. Lim Siew Chin and Ms. Esther Chaw, underscores CIC’s leadership in clinical research excellence.

Discussions also centered around improving operational processes, particularly budget negotiation and the Clinical Trial Agreement (CTA) review. CIC is preparing to implement streamlined strategies by early 2025, aimed at enhancing efficiency and collaboration. Moreover, the session highlighted a shared commitment to fostering the next generation of clinical trialists. Both teams explored training initiatives and strategies to attract young professionals to the field of clinical research.

In line with industry advancements, updates on the Decentralized Clinical Trial (DCT) ecosystem in Southeast Asia were shared. The development of operational manuals and guidelines in Malaysia was discussed, positioning CIC to adopt cutting-edge methodologies that broaden trial accessibility. Furthermore, CIC gained valuable insights from Syneos on upgrading its monitoring room booking system to facilitate smoother operations for Clinical Research Associates (CRAs).

A Productive and Forward-Thinking Session

The meeting was highly productive, with actionable takeaways for both teams. The shared insights and collaborative spirit further strengthen the partnership between CIC and Syneos Health. Both teams look forward to the next catalyst site update in Q1 2025, with continued focus on innovation and excellence in clinical trials.
